Once you have completed a risk assessment, you should draw up a Health and Safety Plan and assess any security issues.
Health & Safety
If you are organising a festival/event within your own organisation, check existing health and safety policies. Make sure they apply and adapt as necessary.
If you are using an external venue, confirm that the health and safety documents cover all the festival/event activities.
If you do not have a health & safety plan, download a leaflet from www.hse.gov.uk which covers:
- Health & Safety Policy statement
- Responsibilities
- Health and Safety Risks
- Consultation with employees
- Safe plant & equipment
- Safe handling & use of substances
- Information, instruction and supervision
- Competency for tasks & training
- Accidents, first aid etc.
- Monitoring
- Emergency Procedures
- Some key areas of risks
- Getting more information
This is a useful practical guide with standard forms covering most procedures.
Security
Again, check whether any existing policies cover your event. If not, consider:
- Entrances, gates, turnstiles
- Overall access to site
- Cash storage
- Merchandising
- Restricted areas
- VIP security
- Unruly visitors
- Car parking
- Bars - alcohol storage
- Staff identification badges/system
- Overnight security
Your local Crime Prevention Officer (contact via your local police station) will be able to give advice on many of these issues.
Key Points:
- Produce a clear health & safety policy
- Don't take short cuts on security
